Kudos to Etsy

Posted in Random Reflections

With April right around the corner, the time approaches that many dread: Mother’s Day. With a deceased mother, I especially dislike the multitude of emails “reminding” me how important it is that I find the right present.

But this year, there’s a shining light of hope that I won’t have to go through this every year until I die.

I want to take a moment to applaud Etsy for being the first — that I’ve seen — to make a move that, admittedly is long overdue.

The other day, I received an email from Etsy giving me the option to opt out of Mother’s Day emails.

Etsy email. Subject: Don't want Mother's Day emails? Body: We understand that Mother's Day can be a difficult time for some. If you'd rather not receive emails from us about Mother's Day this year, let us know by clicking on the button below. We'll still keep you in the loop about one-of-a-kind finds we think you'll love, just without the Mother's Day messages.

It’s a simple message, an easy thing. Just one button tap excludes me from a barrage of painful reminders.

With a decent amount of email marketing knowledge under my belt, I can say that this would be super easy to implement in any halfway decend marketing platform.

So, thank you, Etsy, for showing some thoughtfulness. Here’s hoping more businesses will follow suit.
