I hardly know where to start with this treasure. I suppose it makes sense to begin at the beginning.

360 degree view of The Right Royal Pen
I pieced together a 360 degree view of my fantastic new pen.

When Stanford Pen Studio posted a Jaguar pen painted by Marian Binder, my mind immediatley jumped to a cat pen. Specifically, a pen portrait of my beloved Bumbledore.

So, with nothing to lose, I reached out to Di and asked about commissioning a portrait of my sweet boy.

To my delight, Marian was willing to paint Bumble. She finished surprisingly quickly, and I squealed in joy when Di sent me a preview video. Never has it been so hard to wait for a pen to arrive!

But, now it’s here, and I MUST give it a pen porn post. This is, as I’ve mentioned, a portrait — or, as Di fantastically calls it, a paw-trait. The cap has His Meowjesty’s face — eyes to chin — and the barrel is his tail. In fact, as I’ve long since dubbed Bumble “His Meowjesty, Alpha Bumbledore I,” this is his official portrait and this pen is hereafter known as The Right Royal Pen.

The Pen

What you may not understand from standalone photos is just what a magnificent job Marian did of capturing His Meowjesty. Allow me to show you.

I love the complexity of this paw-trait. There are so many layers of color and brush strokes.

His nose has been perfectly captured, including the little patch of hair above his nose that catches the light.

His whiskers are proud and prominent.

And Marian has even included one of his fanglets.

I can’t quite tell if the tail layers are different colors or if they’re done using a dry brush with varying amounts of paint. Regardless, it looks amazing! And it gives off the feel of plushiness that His Meowjesty’s tail has in real life

But, back to the cap. I can’t get over the eyes. The paw-trait’s eyes are so lifelike! It’s just like when His Meowjesty himself watches me.

On top of that — and this may be my imagination — it kind of looks like there’s the reflection of a person in his left eye. So it’s like I can see myself in his eyes, a permanent reminder of our bond.

Finishing Touches

In my quest to make it the perfect homage to His Meowjesty, I’ve inked it with Robert Oster Cherry Blossom, which is the closest match to his tongue color as I’ve been able to find.

I also plan to get a custom pen sleeve made that resembles His Meowjesty’s favorite bed, and I’m working on the image to get engraved on the nib. I’ll post some follow-up pictures on my Instagram once it’s all done.

If it’s not clear from this post, I adore this pen. I can’t thank Di, Dave, and Marian enough for making this pen a reality. It is now, and I can say with as much certainty as humans are capable of, that it always will be, my favorite pen. I will certainly cherish it forever.

Thank you for reading until the end, I hope you enjoyed this post. Do you own any Stanford Pen Studio pens? Would you like to? Would you ever commission a pet portrait? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.
