High levels indicate liver damage, toxin ingestion, Cushing\u2019s disease and various metabolic disorders. Timolol is in a class of medications called topical beta blockers which reduce intraocular pressure preventing damage to the optic nerve and the subsequent loss of vision. Dorzolamide is in a class of medications called topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors which reduce intraocular pressure similar to beta-blockers. A portion of the disease to be tested for (the antigen) is attached to a solid surface, like a medical tube or plastic plate. This virus acts as the antigen. The blood sample is then added to the surface. If the sample contains antibodies for the disease, they\u2019ll bind to the antigen; if not, nothing will happen. Another antibody is then added that will bind to any antibody that\u2019s already attached to the antigen. This second antibody is linked with an enzyme (a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction). This is the \u201cenzyme-linked\u201d portion of ELISA. Finally, a substance is added that reacts with the enzyme and makes the substances change color if antibodies are present. If the test is positive, then a color reaction will occur. The intensity of the color change is proportional to the amount of the antibody. The method involves running an electrical current through a gel containing the molecules of interest. Based on their size and charge, the molecules will travel through the gel in different directions or at different speeds, allowing them to be separated from one another. The separated proteins are transferred out of the gel to the surface of a membrane which is then exposed to an antibody specific to the target protein. Using a radioactive or chemical tag allows for detection of any binding that has occurred, which signals the presence of the protein. | Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/genetics-glossary\/Western-Blot\">National Human Genome Research Institute<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"iop\">Intraocular Pressure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In researching the &#8220;normal&#8221; range for intraocular pressure (IOP) I found that many sources disagree. I developed the &#8220;normal&#8221; range I used for my <a href=\"\/blog\/athena-8\/\">July 1 Athena post<\/a> from the information below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Normal cats exhibit a pronounced circadian rhythm in IOP, with highest values at night (by about 4- 5 mmHg) and a gradual decline in IOP occurring during the day (with IOP in the mid-to late afternoon about 1-1.5 mmHg lower than morning values). Intraocular pressure in cats is also influenced by the age of the subject, being considerably lower in geriatric cats than in young cats; higher in adolescent than in adult cats, and lower in young kittens within the first few weeks of life than in adolescent cats. In one large study involving 538 cats 7 years of age and older, normal mean IOP as measured by Tono-pen XL was <strong>12.3 \u00b14.0 mmHg<\/strong>. In those cats in which IOP was measured on multiple occasions over time, IOP decreased progressively and it was not unusual for aged cats to have very low IOPs (\u2264 7 mmHg) in the absence of any signs of anterior uveitis. This reduction in IOP may reflect reduction in active secretion of aqueous humor associated with declining systemic health. Marked asymmetry in IOPs, with a difference of 12mmHg or more between eyes, or an IOP of 25mmHg or more in older cats (measured with a Tono-pen XL), should prompt a thorough evaluation for ocular abnormalities including glaucoma. | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3348181\/\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Normal IOP in cats is<strong> 15-25 mmHg<\/strong>. I developed the &#8220;normal&#8221; range I used for my <a href=\"\/blog\/athena-8\/\">July 1 Athena post<\/a> from the information below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petplace.com\/article\/cats\/pet-health\/schirmer-tear-test-stt-in-cats\/\">Schirmer Tear Test overview<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average STT for the right eyes was 12.16 \u00b1 4.04 mm\/minute, and for the left eyes, it was 12.76 \u00b1 4.41 mm\/minute (for both eyes: <strong>12.46 \u00b1 4.20 mm\/minute<\/strong>), with a median of 13.50 for both eyes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8770198\/table\/table1\/\">Table 1<\/a>). Reference values were calculated, and they ranged from <strong>11.27 to 13.65 mm\/minute<\/strong>. No significant differences were recorded in the STT for the right and left eyes of the cats (<em>p<\/em>&nbsp;&gt; 0.05). Our results were slightly lower than in our previous observations (15.8 \u00b1 6.1 mm\/minute in the right eye and 17.3 \u00b1 5.6 mm\/minute in the left eye) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8770198\/#ref8\">Kovalcuka and Nikolajenko, 2020<\/a>). There was a significant difference between STT values in kittens (\u22646 months old) and cats of other age groups (P&lt;0.001). A substantial number of cats with clinically normal eyes had STT values less than 10 mm\/min. No significant difference was found between males (14.7\u00b15.0 mm\/min) and females (<strong>15.1\u00b14.5 mm\/min<\/strong>) in STT values (P=0.46).
