As sometimes happens, these items are subject to a markup when sold as pen items \u2014 let&#8217;s call it a pen tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I want to walk you through some items that you should purchase in their original form\/under their original uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: I&#8217;m including Amazon links for the &#8220;original&#8221; form because it&#8217;s easy and available to everyone. I&#8217;m sure there are many other locations you can buy these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Syringes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.34%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dhresource.com\/0x0\/f2\/albu\/g8\/M00\/8B\/23\/rBVaVF46oHKAZnv2AAELY9QYQns252.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to get syringes and blunt-tip needles. Most fountain pen stores price them in the $2.50-$3.00 each range. While for some of us, a single syringe is enough, I prefer to have one for each pen I fill each week (5 total). Amazon has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B074M4RB86\/\">5ml syringes<\/a> for $0.69 each (10 for $6.99) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00NDETMR2\/\">3ml syringes<\/a> for $0.60 each (10 for $6.03).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cleaning Bulbs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i5.walmartimages.com\/asr\/cf35d7a0-b95f-4519-8f33-12a762db8f6e_1.f64e5d4322577cd0421f5259463a0f5b.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>You may or may not know that these useful items are baby nasal aspirator bulbs. While a fountain pen bulb cleaner will run you $3.50 on average, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B001OTK6JG\/\">baby nasal aspirator<\/a> will cost you $2.89.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Micromesh<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn.ecommercedns.uk\/files\/2\/203492\/4\/32646194\/buff-stick.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Whether a 3-step polishing stick or a sheet of high-grit sandpaper, micromesh can be pricey. Especially given you can go through them fairly quickly if you regularly work on nibs. But, you can get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B09NZHH8MH\/\">off-brand polishing sticks<\/a> for $5.99 for a pack of 10 different grit levels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ink Vials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/goldspot.com\/cdn\/shop\/products\/empty-ink-vials-for-samples-5-pack-clear-secure-twist-cap-828.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>There are MANY types of sample vials, none of which were created specifically for ink samples. While they aren&#8217;t expensive in the pen world (averaging $3.00 for 10), you can get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07QJXTVTT\/\">50 for $6.00<\/a> on Amazon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ink Vial Storage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/m.media-amazon.com\/images\/I\/71FFiF6FJUL._SL1500_.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Just like there are different types of sample vials, mostly for lab samples, there are several types of storage for them. The 5-part shelves (2 ends and three shelf parts) most often sold by pen stores run an average of $13. You can get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B005Z4QWIK\/\">test tube rack<\/a> \u2014 same product, different name \u2014 for $6.00.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ink Remover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I keep seeing ink companies release ink remover for hands. I can&#8217;t say enough how unnecessary this is. You have a few options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make a sugar scrub. There are tons of recipes online. You can either make a big batch, or add a bit of sugar to your hands with dish soap.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0002ZWVWS\/\">Lava soap<\/a>. It will last you quite a while, unless you&#8217;re regularly dousing your hands in ink. You just have to be careful around knuckles or on the back of your hands. Lava soap can be rough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use an exfoliating cloth. I use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B09637N3JD\/\">these<\/a> with Dawn dish soap. I have yet to come across an ink that isn&#8217;t removed with this method.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash your hair. As long as you have hair at least an inch long, simply washing your hair will get rid of ink. It usually works on ink under nails, too!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One That&#8217;s Worth It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.indy-pen-dance.com\/images\/D\/brass_shims.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>With all of these items that you <em>shouldn&#8217;t<\/em> get as pen supplies, there&#8217;s one that you should. Brass shims <em>can<\/em> be purchased elsewhere in large quantities, but it&#8217;s not really worth it. Most of us wouldn&#8217;t go through a 100&#8243; roll. Shims last for a long time, and can easily be bent back into shape if necessary. It just makes more sense to get the pre-cut pieces than a full roll.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know about these options?
