After the Bennets had dined at Netherfield Park, he said, “Her a beauty? I should as soon call her mother a wit.”

Yeah – that one.

This is a story where we explore all these beautiful what-ifs.

Review

This story offers a very different look at our favorite Pride and Prejudice characters. The initial alteration is minimal: the Bennets are well-off. But it changes everything.

Mrs. Bennet isn’t hysterical over finding husbands for her daughters, so she and Mr. Bennet still get on well. The girls have been well-educated and are all expected to conform to conventional standards of deportment.

This all results in a very different story; one that for the most part, I adored. I appreciate Jane’s stronger character and the more felicitous marriage of the Bennets. Colonel Fitzwilliam’s extra page time fleshes out his character nicely. Wickham and Lady Catherine are both dealt with satisfactorily. And Charlotte Collins gets a more rosy future.

There are two things that could have been handled better. Mrs. Bennet still chooses to “act silly” to test the fortitude of her daughters’ potential beaux. Or, at least, that’s what she says. It feels like an attempt by the author to leave in a story element they don’t quite know how to eliminate.

The other is Elizabeth’s change in feelings for Mr. Darcy. In the original, she has months, and many important events, to show her he’s changed. In Pride and Perception, she has nothing but a short conversation with Jane. Not even a letter from Mr. Darcy. And the change happens over a couple of weeks, a month at most. Yet she says she’s long been ashamed of her actions. It doesn’t feel right.

However, I very much enjoyed the story and powered through it. Pride and Perception is a lovely, lighthearted read of the kind I most enjoy. I look forward to reading some of the author’s other works.

About the Author

“If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.” ~ Jane Austen

Lover of books, scribbler of words <– this pretty much sums up my life other than a current obsession with cooking shows. How do they turn pink cotton candy into a delicious entree? Seriously, I can barely butter my bread some mornings…

I love all things Regency and this translates well with what I’m currently working on – Jane Austen Fan Fiction – set smack dab in the middle of Regency England. I also write sweet contemporary romance set in my fictional town of Ravenwood, Illinois. You will find I have a weakness for Alpha males and feisty heroines who keep them on their toes.

I look forward to meeting you, between the pages.

Author links: Website | Facebook | Goodreads | Instagram | Pinterest | BookBub | Amazon Author Page | Newsletter Sign-up

Disclaimer: This review is based on an eBook I borrowed from Amazon on April 29, 2021 as part of the Kindle Unlimited program.

“[It] is a lovely, lighthearted read of the kind I most enjoy.” Check out my review of *Pride & Perception* by Sue Barr.

Keep ReadingReview – Pride & Perception

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

115
87,105,71,39,155,146,171,159
post-4799","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-book-blogger","tag-4star","tag-adult","tag-book-review","tag-books","tag-historical-romance","tag-literary-fiction","tag-pride-and-prejudice","tag-regency","entry
https://i0.wp.com/racheldelafuente.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ppIGSm.jpg?fit=288%2C288&ssl=1
"Definitely recommend it." Check out my review of *Miss Lucas: A Pride and Prejudice Variation* by A.V.
