What if\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last man in the world she could be prevailed upon to marry\u2026is her husband?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice<\/em>, Elizabeth Bennet tells the proud Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy that she wouldn’t marry him if he were the last man in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what if she never said the words? What if circumstances conspired to make her accept Darcy the first time he proposes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this installment of Abigail Reynolds’s acclaimed Pride and Prejudice <\/em>Variations, Elizabeth agrees to marry Darcy against her better judgment, setting off a chain of events that nearly brings disaster to them both\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Review<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While full of drama stemming from misunderstandings, I liked Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy: The Last Man in the World<\/em> (TLMitW<\/em>). I found myself more emotionally invested than I would have expected. Elizabeth and Darcy’s hurts touched me; I really felt for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ending wrapped things up nicely and was pretty satisfying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would have liked to see more of some of the other characters in Pride and Prejudice<\/em>. TLMitW<\/em> was exceedingly Elizabeth and Darcy centric, almost to the exclusion of everyone else. At the very least it would have been nice to see Elizabeth and Georgiana’s relationship evolve as they got to know each other better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, overall, it was a good read. A lovely way to fill an afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abigail Reynolds may be a nationally bestselling author and a physician, but she can\u2019t follow a straight line with a ruler. Originally from upstate New York, she studied Russian and theater at Bryn Mawr College and marine biology at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. After a stint in performing arts administration, she decided to attend medical school, and took up writing as a way to retain her sanity during her years as a physician in private practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
