This is one of two Zek Pens pens I picked up at the DC Pen Show this year. It was the first to catch my eye, so it’s the first I’m sharing. Zek Pens includes — but may not be limited to — a brother-sister team. The brother makes the pens, and the sister paints them. This design is hand-painted Turkish illumination on a resin body. The paint is sealed, so you don’t have to worry about scuffs.

As always, let’s start with the 360° views. This pen is complex enough that I couldn’t create an unwrapped image, so I provided a photo layout, instead.

The Art

The color palette is phenomenal. The blue, turquoise, and silver are such a beautiful combination. While everyone loves to “kill winter with orange,” this will definitely be one of my go-to pens for my rebellious “kill summer with blue” movement.

I love the watercolor, or perhaps stained glass, effect in the illumination. Rather than mixing colors, the artist has watered down the color to create gradients. It gives the design a more limited color palette, but also allows the material to show through.

And speaking of material, it’s a gorgeous gray pearlescent resin that’s incredibly difficult to photograph. it’s not as yellow as it looks in the photos, but I couldn’t get it the color true to life, probably because of the blues.

I also have to draw attention to the beautifully precise bands painted at the base of the cap and top of the barrel.

Final Thoughts

I’m really happy to have this pen in my collection. It’s a gorgeous addition, and I can easily see myself getting more Zek Pens in the future.
