I’ve written about my ADHD a few times now. Today you get another update.
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve likely seen my crochet posts. Crochet is my new hyperfixation hobby. For those unfamiliar with the term, hyperfixation is when someone becomes intensely passionate and involved in an activity or hobby for extended periods of time — often at the expense of other responsibilities and daily tasks.
I’ve always had a tendency to return to fiber art hobbies, irrespective of the amount of time it’s been since I last engaged in them. Whether cross-stitch, knitting, embroidery, or sewing, I always find my way back to them.
I dabbled in crochet a few years ago, but didn’t fall in love with it, especially with the amigurumis I tried. But, this past May, after being served a ridiculous number of ads for The Woobles, I gave in and decided to try crochet again.
The “beginner” yarn — actually a knitted tube filled with some type of stuffing — made a significant difference since it’s nearly impossible to crochet “into” the yarn (between the individual threads.

I’m now 130ish crocheted items in, not including the pen lanyards I’ve made (9, I think, so far), and my interest shows no signs of waning. I’m having tons of fun, and have so many things I want to make — including a blanket I bought a kit for.
The positives:
- I’m having fun.
- I’m learning a lot.
- I’ve made cute gifts for friends.
- Individual purchases (kits don’t count) are cheaper than pens and most ink bottles.
- I can make fun decorations, clothes, and all sorts of useful things.
The negatives:
- I still have a crochet things that need homes.
- The purchases add up quickly.
- I have a hard time working on other things.
That last one is the biggest problem. It’s affecting my productivity, especially for my blog.
So, please bear with me as I work on getting my head back in the blog game. I’m hoping that once the shutdown is over and I’m back to work, having more structure in my day will help. After all, I did alright pre-shutdown.
In the meantime — which hopefully won’t be much longer — I expect that I’ll have fewer blog posts than usual. I’m trying to give myself reasonable goals for each day, some tasks to accomplish, so I do more than crochet. But fighting my brain is tiring, and I don’t want to find myself in full executive dysfunction mode, either. So it’s a balancing act.
For now, I’m going to focus on the Inktober Skirmishes, and if I manage more than that, I’ll be very happy.
Thanks for your patience and understanding!
If you have any tips for managing hyperfixation hobbies, please let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.
