My Rating: ★★★★☆
After a lifetime of bounties and bloodshed, Viv is hanging up her sword for the last time.
The battle-weary orc aims to start fresh, opening the first ever coffee shop in the city of Thune. But old and new rivals stand in the way of success — not to mention the fact that no one has the faintest idea what coffee actually is.
If Viv wants to put the blade behind her and make her plans a reality, she won’t be able to go it alone.
But the true rewards of the uncharted path are the travelers you meet along the way. And whether drawn together by ancient magic, flaky pastry, or a freshly brewed cup, they may become partners, family, and something deeper than she ever could have dreamed.
Review
NOTE: This review is based on an eBook I borrowed from my local public library system on December 22, 2025.
I’d heard a lot of good things about Legends & Lattes (L&L) before I decided to give it a chance. I haven’t historically had great luck with fantasy books, so I tend to avoid them. But I really enjoyed L&L. To me, it was more of a non-fantasy story taking place in a fantasy setting, and that suited me just fine.
The characters are memorable and loveable. The story gets a bit slow in places, but I always wanted to know what happened next. There isn’t much conflict, and what exists isn’t overly angsty or critical; you know that everything will turn out OK. Which is exactly what I look for in books.
My favorite aspect of the story — aside from the characters — was the descriptions of the food and beverages. I loved how the various menu offerings were described and introduced to the characters. I can only assume Travis Baldree is a foodie.
I heartily recommend L&L, even if you don’t usually like fantasy, like me.
Notable Quotes
Chapter 18: I learned to stay loose and level a long time ago. Things always turn out better that way, usually for everybody.
Chapter 21: Failure to act was as much a decision as any other.
Chapter 28: … you don’t have to forget who you were … because that’s what brought you here.
