Ink Battle: Colorverse and Colorverse

Posted in Ink

This ink battle is between Colorverse Monkeyhead Nebula and Colorverse Mystic Mountain. In the first battle, both inks are in pens with a medium Jowo nib. In the second, they are in a TWSBI 580 with a fine nib. Both battles are fought on white Rhodia Goalbook paper.

For this particular Ink Battle, I’m comparing two ink samples, trying to decide which to purchase. Monkeyhead Nebula and Mystic Mountain are both desaturated blues with rose gold shimmer.

Unfortunately, because I’m working from samples for both inks, the shimmer distribution is lacking. It’s nearly impossible to see the shimmer in the first battle, and difficult in the second. But, looking for silver linings, it means I can truly compare the ink colors.

You can find all of the ink battles posts on the tag page.

For some reason, while Mystic Mountain photographs fairly true-to-life, Monkeyhead Nebula does not. It shows up much more green in photos than it does on paper. I’ve done my best to edit the photos, but they aren’t perfect, even on my screen. The color comparison at the end of this post is the closest to real life.

As you can see, Monkeyhead Nebula is almost identical to Grey Jeans, whereas Mystic Mountain is, at least, a little different from the other inks I have in my collection.

Ultimately, I think Mystic Mountain is the better choice for me. The color is slightly more unique to my collection, and the bottle is smaller.

What do you think? Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.

I tend to gravitate toward more saturated color and in the first battle it looks like Mystic is more saturated. But in the second battle, Monkeyhead looks more so…
I also write with medium more often than fine so likely I’d have chosen Mystic for showing up the way I like in a pen I’m more likely to use.

This is my first ink battle! I like how deliberate you are about your ink choices. My take away is that I need to be more deliberate and to put potential inks through some vetting before just buying anything at all. Thank you

    • I used to buy inks willy-nilly. And I sometimes still do. But I try to at least test before buying now. I’m also trying to remind myself that a sample might be enough in some cases.

I have a bottle of the Monkeyhead Nebula. I still use it occasionally, but it’s a bit light for my taste (should have first tried a sample🫤). Now I want to try this similar Mystic Mountain since it appears to be darker and more what I was initially looking for.
    Thanks for this comparison!
*off to purchase an ink sample*😊
