Something New to Contemplate

Posted in Fountain Pens

As I scrolled through Instagram the other day, I came across an ad for the newest Stimagz release. My first thought was, “How do they keep selling so many colors?” Obviously, they have new customers who buy new releases, but there must also be customers who buy multiple colorways.

In that initial thought storm, the idea seemed ridiculous. A different color doesn’t make it different; it’s still the same item. Why would you want multiples of the same thing?

Are you rolling your eyes yet? Because that’s where I caught how hypocritical my thoughts were. As I’m sure you know, thoughts race, so that was only a few seconds at most. But I still had a mental facepalm moment.

Who has multiple colorways of one item? Me. Several times over. And while some have different nib sizes, not all of them do.

So, why do I have multiple colorways of pens when I clearly find the idea silly for other items? I don’t really know.

I’m sure some of it is the “new shiny” and/or “it’s pretty.” But if that was all, then I would be fine selling a previous colorway to make way for the new one. But I’m rarely open to that. I certainly don’t manage one in, one out.

I guess I have something new to contemplate. But tell me, are you team colorways or team one is enough?

If you’re team colorways, why do you like to have multiples of the same item? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.

Speaking specifically of pens, though this carries through to clothes, fabric, yarn, etc., too: when I find something I love — to use, to wear, to craft with or by, etc. — it is a comfort and a joy to have many pleasing colors of such things. Also I definitely don’t NEED rainbows of things? But it makes me insanely happy to HAVE rainbows of things.

    • I do love me a good rainbow. I bet that plays into my colorways interest without me even realizing it.

Some things I have multiple colors/patterns for (Lamy, Preppy, Kaweco fountain pens.) But I don’t have too many things like that.
