Review
NOTE: This review is based on an eBook I purchased from Amazon.
There are minor **SPOILERS** in this review.
In the 1.5 years since I last read Away From Longbourn, I’d forgotten that Jane is a villain in it. Generally, I dislike villain Jane stories, but some of the other characters are so strong, I don’t mind this one.
Original character Isabella is, in many ways, the author’s replacement for Jane.
Mrs. Bennet is positively vile in Away From Longbourn, almost to the point of caricature. Thankfully, though, we don’t see much of her once Lizzy leaves home.
Mr. Darcy is remarkably improved, although we are given to understand that’s partially because Lizzy is no longer encumbered by her poorly-behaved relatives.
Mary is greatly improved by living with, and unofficially being adopted by, the Gardiners. Kitty likewise improves once she realizes that not being hated by her mother is not the same thing as being adored like Lydia.
Even Lydia manages to improve once she is ruined, and ends up with a fairly good life.
In the end, it is only Lady Catherine, Wickham, and Jane who have truly terrible ends, all well-deserved. I enjoyed Away From Longbourn, and will likely read it again at some point.
