I’m WAY behind on my pen porn posts. I picked up this Baetylus at the San Francisco pen show last August. Den had sent a selection of their pens with nibmeister Thomas Ang, and this beauty caught my eye almost immediately.
Den is a wizard when it comes to pen shapes, and this one is no exception. If you’re looking for pens with unique shapes, Den is top of my list. Their pens are fully done by hand and inspired by mythology. It doesn’t hurt that Den is a lovely human. Seriously, go take a look at their website and/or Instagram, then come back. Think of it as a pen porn side quest.

As always, let’s start with the 360° views.

The Shape
Like their other pens, the Baetylus model is hand-shaped by Den, so no two are identical. But unlike some of their other models, the Baetylus has interesting facets and divots, making each one truly unique. On top of that, there are multiple variations of the Baetylus, from a more crystal-like version to this twisted-looking version I’ve dubbed the Twister.
The cap has a divot that makes it a delight to fidget with. Then the cap and body are seamless, allowing for a continuous valley snaking its way around the pen in a spiral. When I have this pen inked — and therefore within reach — I often twirl it and follow the valley up and down the pen with my finger.

I can only imagine the amount of work Den puts into polishing their pens, because look at that shine! This particular material is — I’m pretty sure — one of Den’s in-house pours. Most of it is opaque, but you get several peek-a-book spots that are transparent.

Final Thoughts
This Baetylus “Twister” is such a unique shape. I’m happy to have it in my collection.

What do you think of this twisty pen? Do you own any of Den’s pens? Do you want to get one? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.
