Monthly Pen Purchases: January 2023

Posted in Fountain Pens

As I mentioned in my Pen Resolutions Tag and Reviewing My Purchasing Habits posts, I’m trying to limit myself to 36 pen purchases this year. I think that going through my purchases will help me keep on track. So, expect monthly updates on how I’m doing.

A secondary goal I had for myself was to not buy anything in January. My idea was to put January’s allotment toward March to augment my BWIPS “budget.” And I did great, until the 21st. Somehow, in the last 10 days of the month, I bought four pens.

Keep an eye out for upcoming pen porn posts, because all of the pens I got deserve them.

To be fair to myself, all of these purchases were pre-planned, with only the timing uncertain. So, let’s start at the beginning.

I’ve been waiting for Mr. Nakama of 18111 Pens to make another one of these. I think it’s been over a year since he made the last one. I’m very happy to have snagged this one. Now, I just need to fit a PenBBS nib into a Jowo housing. I can check this one off my wish list.

Benu x Gourmet Pens Talisman True Unicorn

Benu Talisman True Unicorn

This one is a Gourmet Pens exclusive (probably obvious given the heading). It’s a special edition being released in small batches. While it’s out of stock right now, follow GourmetPensShop on Instagram and keep an eye on the True Unicorn product page, because it will restock later.

Anyway, I’d known for about a month that it would be coming, but I didn’t know exactly when. There was no question I’d get it once it was available. Unicorn and sparkles? Say no more! Oh, and it would be very remiss of me not to mention that it is, if anything, more beautiful in person.

As I mentioned in my wish list post, I was determined to get one of these pens from the next drop. And I did. It just arrived yesterday — it came from Ireland. I’m slightly concerned about the sound when I uncap it. I’m highly sensitive to metal-on-metal sounds — the sound the powder-coated Kaweco Sports make. I’m going to test it out next week, hopefully it doesn’t bug me and I can keep it.

Analog Notes Precious Petals

Analog Notes Precious Petals

I commissioned this special pen back in November. The petals are from the first flowers Jim gave me. This one got finished on the 27th, and, of course, I paid for it immediately. But, it was pen number 4 for a month that I’d hoped not to make any pen purchases. No regrets, though.

Alright, that’s it for my January purchases. I’ve already bought a February pen, so I’m going to try to not buy anymore this month. I want to pull a pen from February and a pen or two from April for March. I intend to keep myself from going overboard at BWIPS, but I don’t trust my self-control. We’ll see how I do.

Thanks for reading to the end, I hope you enjoyed my post. Did you buy any pens in January? If so, what were they? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.

Make sure to subscribe to my blog or follow me on Instagram so you don’t miss any posts. I generally post at least once a week.

Ooh – how does the analog notes pen work – did you send them the dried flowers?

    • Yes, I sent them the flowers and worked with them to plan the blank. I’ll have a dedicated post about the pen on the 3rd.

I want to see and write with your Gravitas at BWPS. They are on my list because you put them on yours. Lol.

I bought a Parker 45 on E Bay, unfortunately It had no CC or even a cartridge. I am still chasing down that.

I ordered a Birmingham pen Nov 26, 2022. It is still on its way. the NYT article about their business slammed them with orders, they are still trying to catch up and have decided to hire help.

    • Try reaching out to Bertram’s Inkwell. They’ve always been really helpful for cartridges and converters, they might be able to help.

Indie manufacturers are all fairly slammed with work (except maybe the newest brands). Nothing succeeds like success. Hopefully you’ll get your pen soon. 😊
