Review

NOTE: This review is based on an eBook I borrowed from my local public library system.

There are minor **SPOILERS** in this review.

Unfortunately for me, I read this series out of order. I thought, because Bookshops & Bonedust is a prequel, that I could read it third instead of second — it wasn’t available to check out from the library as quickly as Brigands & Breadknives. I was wrong. I really should have read this one second.

That said, this entry didn’t resonate with me as much as the other two did. It seemed slow in places, especially in the middle, to the point where I had to make myself pick it up and read it. To be fair, part of that may be because I had a new release waiting for me from one of my favorite series, but I don’t like reading more than one book at a time.

That said, the awkwardness between Viv and Maylee was driving me bonkers. I wanted to shake them and ask why they’d agreed to a fling if neither of them was truly comfortable with one.

I loved Satchel, and I wish he’d gotten more page time. I’d like to know more of his inner thoughts and feelings, what he does after the story is over, how long he’ll “last” without Varine.

Iridia’s small role in the final set of battles was a surprise. I expected her to be front-and-center, helping fight and defeat the big baddie. Instead, while she certainly plays a part in defending the town, she has no part in the final battle.

Notable Quotes

Chapter 9: … total ignorance never stopped me from trying anything before.

Chapter 24: … the noise piled up against the walls, leaving her alone in the center of a perfect sphere of story.

Chapter 32: Every book is a little mirror, and sometimes you look into it and see someone else looking back.

Chapter 35: Never trust a writer who doesn’t have too many books to read. Or a reader, for that matter…
