Hurst Takes Charge (HTC) is so different from Pride and Prejudice as to call it a complete rewrite. I wouldn’t even call this a variation. Characters have the same names as those we know and love, and some of them even act similarly, but this a completely new story.
That said, I rather enjoyed it. As one would expect, the Hursts get the lion’s share of page time, followed by the Bingleys in the first half and the Bennets in the second half.
Mr. Hurst’s occupation as, essentially, a spy, works really well at first, but as the story goes on, he gets rather careless around his friends. This results in several figuring out that his indolent, alcoholic persona is false and some to realize he does secret work.
HTC is seriously low-stakes, where you never once wonder if anything will befall one of the “good guys.” Of Shana Granderson’s favorite “bad guys,” two are reformed — Lady Catherine and Caroline Bingley — and two are killed — George Wickham and Mr. Collins. However, other than Caroline, none of them see much page time nor have much impact on the main characters’ stories.
I realize that there are those for whom this would be boring beyond belief, but it’s the type of happily ever after read I enjoy. It did, however, drag on in a few places. And, of course, there is the smattering of errors that always mark Ms. Granderson’s works. There seem to be fewer errors in this book than in The Collins Effect, so her improvement continues.
Overall, I’d say this is one of the better entries to this series.
