A Quick Reflection

Posted in Fountain Pens

Work has been intense lately, leaving me without much brain power to work on my blog in the evenings. I’m hoping that will change soon. But, for now, I give you this quick look back at the pens I’ve owned the longest.

Lamy Safari Dark Lilac

Of the pens still in my possession, the Lamy Safari Dark Lilac — Lamy’s 2016 special edition — is the one I’ve owned the longest.

Purchased in April of 2016, this is the first “expensive” pen I bought. Before the Lamy, my only fountain pens had been Preppys, and before those, I’d only purchased non-fountain pens, typically in the $3-$10 range. I remember thinking that $37 was a ridiculous amount to spend on a pen, but Jim was into fountain pens, and I wanted to give his hobby a go.

I retired my Dark Lilac a while back, maybe a year ago, now. It’s a lovely little pen, but I’m not a huge fan of the interchangeable Lamy nibs, so I was no longer excited to use it. Because of its sentimental value, I’m keeping it, but I don’t know when, or if, I’ll use it again.

The Nice Lavande is the still-in-use pen I’ve owned the longest. It was my 25th pen purchase, back in November of 2017 at Bertram’s Inkwell’s November trunk show. I was still such a newbie to the pen world, I didn’t know anything about Platinum — this was my first. It has been a much-loved pen in my collection, and will likely be part of it of many years to come.

Thoughts

Only one pen remains in my collection between the two above, my Stipula Etruria Rainbow Prisma 88 — my first actually expensive pen purchase. It’s also retired now, as I’m not in love with that nib either.

I find it interesting that my longest-owned and longest-in-use pens are both purple. I think I need to run the numbers on what colors I bought each year and which colors I’ve since disposed of. Time for more fun with data!

What pen has been in your collection the longest? Do you still use it? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for reading to the end, I hope you enjoyed my post. Make sure to subscribe to my blog or follow me on Instagram so you don’t miss any posts. I generally post at least once a week.
